Winnipeg Transit has decided to continue its SMS transit information service. The service, called BUStxt, enables travelers in Winnipeg to use SMS to get real time bus information. Users text in keyword commands to a Short Code number in order to retrieve bus times and locate their nearest bus stop. BUStxt has proven to be a highly popular service with around 1.9 million text messages being broadcasted in just its first year.

The City of Winnipeg has launched BUStxt a text messaging service that enables Winnipeggers to receive real time travel information.

Now there are no more agonizing waits at the bus stop on those cold arctic mornings. Instead, all you have to do is grab your mobile and text in to the  BUStxt service.

BUStxt lets you discover next bus arrivals at your bus stop and it alerts you to any problems affecting your route. There is also a bus reminder setting.

BUStxt is all part of a $4.86 million investment project to modernize the Winnipeg transit system. A sophisticated GPS tracking system has been fitted to all city vehicles from which BUStxt gets fed real time transit data.

The new service is free but naturally if your texting out with your free message plan your mobile network will charge you their standard text messaging rate.

A smartphone application version called iMOBILE will also be released in the near future.
